Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE FARM HAS A BAD YEAR? A bad year on the farm is always a risk. 2019 was a challenging year for farmers, including us. We struggled with crop loss and flooding and as a result didn’t always have the diversity of crops we wanted. We don’t know at this point what 2020 will be like, though we hope and pray it is a better year! The nature of farming is that it is unpredictable and that is the shared risk we and you take in a Farm Share. We have methods in place to be more climate-resilient, such as growing in covered greenhouses that are more climate and water controlled and are working on improving our soils so they can mitigate the effects of heavy rainfall or drought. If unforeseen circumstances occur, we will do whatever we can to ensure you still have high quality vegetables. But by joining our Farm Share, you are agreeing to share in the potential risk of crop failure with us and other members.

WHAT IF I DON’T WANT ALL OF THE ITEMS IN MY SHARE? The advantage of a customizable share is you get to choose what you want! If there are items available that you don’t like you may select more quantities of different items or choose to pick only the items you want. Selecting items you aren’t familiar with or don’t know if you like could be an opportunity to learn and discover a new favorite.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN MY SHARE? What is available depends on the season.  We are hoping for a consistent supply of greens, lettuce, and salad mix throughout the year.  In the early part of the Farm Share, you can expect asparagus, greens, radishes, peas, beans, kale.  In the middle part of the summer, we hope to have summer squash, eggplant, broccoli, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, new potatoes.  In the fall, we expect potatoes, winter squash, greens, cabbage, beets, and dry beans.  We have a great chart of expected availability on our website.  But remember, all vegetable availability is determined due to weather.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM GONE FOR A WEEK? Not a problem. Built into our Farm Share is one week off for everybody for the 4th of July and two “vacation” weeks for you. If you and your family will be out of town on vacation, email us and tell us you are using a vacation week, then don’t select any vegetables for that week. You can choose whatever weeks you need as vacation weeks. If you never leave town, you don’t have to use your vacation weeks.

WHAT IS THE PRICE OF THE FARM SHARE? The total price of the Farm Share is $500. This is a 22-week season that includes two vacation weeks for you. If you use both vacation weeks, the cost works out to be $25/week - that’s less than eating out at Culver’s with your family once a week!

DO YOU OFFER HOME DELIVERY? At this time, we are able to offer home delivery to people who live within 45 miles of our farm (19370 County Road G, Mineral Point WI). This includes communities such as: Mineral Point, Darlington, Platteville, Dodgeville, Spring Green, Galena Territory, and more. If you are unsure if your address falls within our delivery zone, please email us at kingshillfarmwi@gmail.com. We are also offering home delivery to residents of the Wicker Park neighborhood in Chicago. Home delivery adds an additional $3/week to the cost of the share.

WHERE DO I PURCHASE A FARM SHARE? You can purchase a share two ways: email us at kingshillfarmwi@gmail.com or go to our farm store. If you email us, we’ll send you an invoice that you can pay securely online. If you prefer, you can mail us a check after you’ve received your invoice. If you’re interested in a payment plan, please let us know, we’d be happy to work with you.

HOW MANY PEOPLE DOES A SHARE FEED? A share will feed a family of two adults and 2-3 children for one week or a couple that incorporates vegetables into most of their meals. We will provide resources such as cooking tips and recipes to help you use your vegetables.

WHAT IF I’M NOT SURE IF A FARM SHARE WILL WORK FOR MY FAMILY? We encourage you to try our Sampler Share! For $105, you’ll get vegetables for the first four weeks of the season, May 26 - June 16. Then if you love it, you can join us for the remainder of the season at a pro-rated price!
